National Service Scheme (NSS)
The National Service Scheme (NSS) was started by the Govt. of India in the Year 1969 with primary focus on the development of personality of students through community service in the country.
Aim and Objectives
Aim: Personality Development of students through community service.
Objectives : The broad objectives of NSS are to:-
- Understand the community in which they work;
- Understand themselves in relation to their community;
- Identify the needs and problems of the community and involve them in problem solving process;
- Develop among them a sense of social and civic responsibility;
- Utilize their knowledge in finding practical solution to individual and community problems;
- Develop competence required for group-living and sharing of responsibilities;
- Gain skills in mobilizing community participation;
- Acquire leadership qualities and democratic attitude;
- Develop capacity to meet emergencies and natural disaster and Practise national integration and social harmony.

The symbol of the NSS is based on the ‘Rath’ wheel of the Konark Sun Temple situated in Orissa. These giant wheels of the Sun Temple portray the cycle of creation, preservation and release, and signify the movement in life across time and space. It stands for community as well as change and implies the continuous striving of National Service Scheme for social transformation & upliftment.
NSS MOTTO
The motto of NSS is ‘NOT Me but You’. This reflects the essence of democratic living and upholds the need for selfless service and appreciation of the other person’s point of view and also to show consideration for fellow human beings.

The activities of NSS develop leadership qualities, selfless service, and a concern for the fellow beings among the youth.There are two units working in the college with a total 200 student volunteers and two programme oficers. Generally, NSS activities begin with the inauguration of its activities in the month of July and end with a valedictory in March. Many distinguished social workers, resource persons; academicians participate in these activities and instill among the youth a spirit of service. National festivals such the Independence Day, Republic Day, Gandhi Jayanthi etc, are celebrated on the college campus with a lot of enthusiasm. Various literary competitions, seminars on relevant topics are held during these days.
Every year the NSS organizes special camps in rural areas. Volunteers engage themselves in rural re-construction activities with the help of the State Government departments, Gram panchayaths, youth unions and local self help groups. Renovation of temples, planting saplings, drainage construction, cleaning of water tanks and school premises, health checkup of villagers and domesticated animals, HIV Awareness programmes are some of the service oriented activities carried out during these camps. Trekking, cultural programmes by the volunteers and local youth, socio-economic surveys, awareness on social evils, propagation of scientific temper are the other activities carried out by NSS. In recent years the camps were organized at Koolahalli in 2014, Nichhapur in 2015, Niluvanji in 2016, Muttigi Village in 2017, Adavihalli in 2018 and Bagali in 2022. The students who join for NSS as volunteer for two years and attend at least one special camp will be issued certificate. The certificate will help the students to procure seats in higher studies and jobs under NSS reserved quota.
The NSS volunteers participate regularly in the weekend activities, which are generally held on Saturdays between 2.00 and 6.00 pm. These activities include cleaning the college campus, teaching primary and higher primary students, lecture programmes by the staff of our college and others from the Universities. Workshops on leadership training are also conducted. The most important activity of the NSS is the Blood Donation Camp in which good number of volunteers participates and donates blood for a noble cause. The Indian Red Cross Society, NGOs such as Rotary and Jaycees collaborate this venture. These activities have helped our students to develop leadership qualities, a spirit of service and sacrifice and also concern for the environment around us.

On January 14, 2023, volunteers from NSS Units 1 and 2 were educated on the importance of cleanliness before cleaning the plastic and other garbage found on campus. The plants were fertilized and watered. All the surrounding weeds were plucked. A total of 80 volunteers were involved in the cleanliness drive.

National Youth Day -12-01-2022

On 12 January, on the 159th birthday of Swami Vivekanand, as a mark of respect to Swamiji, the National Service Scheme (NSS) unit, Youth Red Cross (YRC) and Internal Quality Assurance Cell (IQAC) of A.D.B.First Grade College, Harapanahalli celebrated National Youth Day with the primary aim of sensitizing the students about the philosophies, principles and ideas of Swami Vivekanada.
The program started with the invocation song by Kum. P. Bhramrabhika & Kum. Asha K R of B.Sc-III Sem. Kum.Ashok P, B.A Final year gave floral welcome to dignitaries off and on the Dias. Mr.B.Shivakumar gave a brief introduction about the program. The programme was inaugurated by Dr. S. M. Siddalinga Murthy, Principal, by garlanding the photo of SWAMI VIVEKANANDA, N.S.S. Program officers, teaching , Non-teaching and students were also present. During the event students of various courses delivered the speech. The inspiring stories of Swami Vivekananda’s life briefed to the students by Kum. Akshata.S. & Kum. Asha S of B.A. I year.
Miss. Sushma C, Lecturer in Botany was invited as the guest speaker to speak on Success in Life’. Beginning her talk with a prayer she discussed with students the meaning of real success which is attained only when we do something meaningful in our lives and derive pleasure from our deeds and not just money.
In this context she gave several examples. Her talk was very interesting, filled with interesting stories from mythological books and teachings of Hindu scriptures. She also spoke on the vision of Swami Vivekananda and how the students, the present youth of the country contribute towards nation building. She also spoke on the present status of education system and stressed the relevance of Swamy Vivekananda’s principles in the present world.
Her lecture inspired the youth to lead a very happy and productive life, wherein we should be the donors of love.
The Principal of the institute, Prof. Dr. S.M. Siddalinga Murthy spoke about the importance of following the principles of Swami Vivekananda to achieve a success in life.
The programme was well received by all the faculty and the students. Kumari. Lakshmi, B.A III year anchored the program and Kum. Priyanka.P. B.Sc Final year gave the votes of thanks.

09-01-2020:- As a part of regular activity 83 volunteers of two NSS units in the college have involved in the plastic free and cleanliness programme in the college campus and play ground. In this 2 hours programme students have cleaned plastic wrapper, bottles etc.
